Day 4 Editing

In lesson today, we continued editing our clips together and included more additive dissolve. Our editing has been going really well and we have nearly reached 2 minutes, this is really good because we still have quite a few more footage to use and I think that the sequence of our footage looks really good and I think that our production could look realistic. Mainly due to the fact that we are taking our time and trying out various ideas and seeing how well the clips we have chosen fit together.
We decide to use certain clips over another for a number of reasons, for example; we did not use a clip from the 'happy scene'  in which the season is summer, because there was water vapour coming out of our mouth- this would have nullified our summer theme (even though it was really cold outside we wore summery costumes and having the vapour coming out of our mouth would ruin the effort we put into creating a summer setting.)
Previous to editing we had a half hour session on how to use Garage Band to create our soundtracks (this is because we can not use music from YouTube in our film because we do not have the copy right and if we used their music it would be plagiarism-so instead we make our own and therefore we can make it fit our footage perfectly.) Conor and I had already  previously decided not to even contemplate the use of  Garage Band, until our editing, with all the transitions and effects have been completed. We plan to concentrate on one aspect of our editing at a time so that our overall production would be of excellent quality. Also, in order for us to know that we have put our best effort into each aspect of our production to create an excellent final production.

"WE MANUALLY" CREATED A MONTAGE EFFECT:

We thought it would be a really good idea to put these two clips together, as the locations, though different in theory, are relatively similar. They both show Sarah and James walking down a long path with 'items' (grass/bridge) on either side of them.
Both scenes are supposed to be a contrast of winter and summer(although due to the weather our summer clip looks more like spring). The winter scenes show Sarah and James arguing, whilst the summer scenes show them walking together and enjoying each other's presence. We placed both clips together to show the juxtaposition of the seasons- winter and summer (represented through both characters costumes) and their situation (argument and peace).
We made sure that the distances were similar, because when they weren't the effect was poor and there was a lack of fluidity/continuity between the clips. The opposite was true for when the clips were aligned- the effect was a lot better and visually appeasing and appealing. Also, the point we were trying to make could be seen a lot clearer as a result.

NATURAL FLASHBACK FROM PREVIOUS CLIP-ADDITIVE DISSOLVE:

The natural lighting from the previous clip 'transferred' into our next clip (Sarah back in the bathroom). The effect was great and made the clips flow together a lot better than if we had inserted a plain white background with the additive dissolve, as we had done previously (although it worked really well for that particular scene).
For this scene however the natural lighting affecting the clip was great and made the flashback look more natural and realistic and we hope professional as well. We included just the additive transition to the clip and this was the result (second image with the bright light):

WE  HAVE STARTED EDITING IN THE VIOLENT SCENES...

CONOR HAD  A REALLY GOOD IDEA OF INCORPORATING OUR UNUSED FOOTAGE FROM THE HAPPY SCENE INTO THE VIOLENT SCENES AS WELL, INSTEAD OF JUST SHOWING THE VIOLENT SCENES CONTINUALLY FOR THE REST OF THE OPENING SEQUENCE.

CROPPING...

We cropped the hand in order to remove the sprite bottle from the clip, so that we can use this clip as 'another day' when Sarah and James were still romantic. If the Sprite bottle was still shown then the audience would link the scene to the happy flashback scene shown earlier on in the opening sequence-and we do not want that. The image is supposed to represent a different day and time separate to the other flashbacks.
This is one of the clips that we incorporated into the violent ones. The following clip will be hands as well but there will be a contrast in the hands. The hands pictured below represent love and intimacy, but the hands that follow this very image connotes protections of self as the tall dark image lashes out at the POV Shot of Sarah.

BEFORE BLUR EFFECT:

AFTER BLUR EFFECT:
{WE DID THIS BECAUSE WE THOUGHT THAT THE QUALITY OF THE ORIGINAL WAS TERRIBLE, AND WE FELT THE BLUR HELPED COVER THAT FACT.}

This was the clip that we had originally planned to link with the cafe scene in the happy flashback, but because of continuity we did not use the clip, as it did not show my bracelets and my "stunt double" had a ring on when previously I had no ring on my hand. As a result we decided against using the clip, but then we thought it would be a good idea to place this clip in between the violent scenes to further emphasis the contrast in events taking place as well as to signify Sarah and James' relationship to the audience. Also we liked the connotations and the semiotic effects the image has.

WE DECIDED THAT WE WILL ADD IN OUR COLOUR CORRECTION EFFECTS WHEN WE HAVE COMPLETELY FINISHED EDITING ALL OUR CLIPS TOGETHER, WITH THE TRANSITIONS. THIS IS SO THAT WE FOCUS ON THE OVERALL EFFECT OF OUR EDITED CLIPS SEPARATELY AND THEN WE CAN CONCENTRATE ON ALL THE OTHER EFFECTS AND SEE THE IMPACT THEY WOULD HAVE ON OUR SEQUENCE AS A WHOLE.
